The follow criteria should be used to prepare for the World Music Presentations. Groups must be made up of three students, with a mix of gender and nationalities*. You are not allowed to research your own nationality(s). Please look at what others have selected and do not repeat what they are doing. There should not be any duplicates in countries, styles, composers, or instruments from that country within a given class. First come, first served.
YouTube Video – Final product will be uploaded to Youtube so that it can be archived for future classes. It is recommended that you make a Presentation using Google Docs. This way you and your partner(s) can work from the comforts of your own home, but still be collaborating effectively. When it is finished, export it to PowerPoint on your computer. Then you can add additional effects and sound before exporting it as a video. You can use iMovie, quicktime, or any other methods as long as it can transfer to Youtube.
Presentation – The movie must be self-sufficient, meaning you will not be able to press any buttons, change to a link, or adjust volume up and down. Presentations should be between 5-8 minutes, and include the sound file of your selected piece of music that is between 1-2 minutes in length. Additional sounds clips of instruments, rhythmic clips, or samples are allowed, but keep the focus on your main song. All students should take part in the narration of the presentation.
Content – You must focus on a style or genre, time period, or composer, from your selected country. In doing so, focus on the following points and connect them to your topic center.
- Musical Context –
- Song selection – a piece of music that represents the culture being investigated.
- Context and Composer – Is there a composer that is known for this? What is the time period of this genre?
- Musical Elements –
- Melody and Harmony – What distinguishes the melody? What distinguishes the harmony? What is the Key Signature of the music? How about the Time Signature?
- Medium – What instruments are used? How many instruments are featured in this example? Is the music used for a certain purpose?
- Musical Structure –
- Form – Is there a form? What stands out? What characteristics can you describe from the music? Are there sections that repeat? Varying Dynamics? Additional expressions.
